The application environment must be complete and each step in the process is checked, such as database communication and network communications. This is done during the initial testing when the application is built, and is also performed as a regression test to verify and validate any changes or patches.

The purpose of these kind of tests it to identify system dependencies and ensure proper data flow between all components. Real-world scenarios are used for a more complete test of all integrated components. Examples of end-to-end testing could include alpha and beta testing, or system testing.
